Defense proved to be the key for the Terre Haute South freshmen basketball team on Monday night.

The Braves used a trap to force seven turnovers in the first quarter against the Knights and held off a furious second half rally for a 47-40 win.

Terre Haute South's pressure defense caused Northview fits in the early going while the Braves built a double-digit lead.

South got a first quarter 3-pointer from Nick Henderson and eight first half points from Lucas Steward to lead 19-12 at the halftime break.

The Knights proved resilient however, chipping away at the Braves' lead as Northview used quick passes to break the Braves' trapping defense.

Once Northview figured a way to avoid their own mistakes, the Knights attacked the basket for some quick scores. Zach Hull slashed to the hoop for six third quarter points and a 3-pointer from Dillon Reynolds narrowed the gap to 19-17.

South quickly bounced back, however, with 3-pointers from Henderson and Ian Long to push the gap back to 27-20.

Jordan Girton scored off a nice assist under the hoop from Reynolds and Hull added a pair of free throws to get the Knights within 30-24.

South's own turnover issues helped fuel Northview's third quarter rally.

After Hull's free throws, Reynolds scored in transition after a Braves' turnover. South turned the ball over again after an inbounds violation and Hull got to the free throw line for two shots.

Hull sank both to get the Knights back within two points heading into the final quarter.

Opening the fourth quarter, Lucas Steward scored two of his game-high 18 points for the Braves to extend the lead to 34-30 before Jacob Ninesling answered for the Knights.

From there however, the Braves slowly extended the lead as Northview struggled with more turnovers.

Austin England scored for the Braves before Hull answered with two more free throws on his way to 16 points for the Knights.

The Braves were able to salt away the game from the free throw line down the stretch, hitting nine-of-11 in the fourth quarter.

Steward had 10 of his points in the fourth quarter to help the Braves finish off the win.

Reynolds had nine points in the game while Hull added eight rebounds for the Knights. Ninesling had five points and Bryant Pestoff had six for Northview. Jordan Girton added four.

The Knights are back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Avon at 6 p.m.
