Carl J. "Jack" Mercer, 82, Speedway, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2008.
Mr. Mercer was born March 9, 1926, in Brazil, to Carl W. and Vallie Mercer.
Mr. Mercer served his country in the United States Army Air Corp. Jack was a graduate of Brazil High School and a 1950 graduate of Indiana University.
He was a member of the IU Alumni Association, a member of the I Men's Club and also served on their board of directors.
He played basketball for IU and received the Clevenger award from IU.
Mr. Mercer was district sales manager for Bridgeport Brass for 26 years and a salesman for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association for 15 years.
Jack was a Sagamore of the Wabash, a member of the Brickyard Crossing Men's Club, CPR Golf Club, American Legion, Elk's Lodge and Moose Lodge.
Jack enjoyed his officiating of high school and small college football and basketball games for 35 years. He officiated on several state basketball tournaments.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Linda and his son Mark A. Mercer.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn J. Mercer, sons Douglas J. and Curt D. Mercer, stepsons Jeff and Marc Thomas, stepdaughters Debra Kirkendall and Julie Napier, brother Dick Mercer, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will take place at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 18, 2008, at the Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway Chapel, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
A graveside service will take place at 1:30 p.m., at the Cottage Hill Cemetery, Brazil.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity.
