The Edgewood Mustangs took the edge in the Western Indiana Conference girls' basketball standings on Friday night by outscoring Northview 77-60.

Edgewood pulled away in the second quarter holding the Knights scoreless for more nearly four minutes while the Mustangs' Brooke Schutte overpowered Northview in the paint.

Schutte had nine points and seven rebounds as Edgewood took a 35-24 lead at halftime. The Knights limited the Mustangs' second-leading scorer, Stephanie Beasley, to four-of-14 shooting from the field, but Northview couldn't make up much ground in the third quarter.

"We knew they had two good inside players," Northview coach LuAnne Anderson said. "We came out flat, missed some early shots and lost our confidence."

The Knights' leading scorer, Spring Raines, sat on the bench for a portion of the second quarter with two fouls, but ripped off an 11-point third quarter. Each time Northview would make a run to get the score within single-digits, Edgewood strung together a matching run.

Raines' third 3-pointer of the quarter made the score 50-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Stormi Raines knocked home a bucket following a steal with 6:53 left in the game to get the Knights within 53-45.

Edgewood answered right back with a score from Beasley, a free throw from the senior and two more shots from the line by Laura Luther to push ahead 58-46.

The Mustangs capped a 9-1 run over a two-minute span to go ahead 62-46 with 4:55 remaining.

Spring Raines, who had 34 points and 10 rebounds in the game, hit a 3-pointer after Carlee Bell scored to get Northview within 65-54, but Edgewood followed with a 12-6 run to finish the game.

"We were riding a two-game high," Anderson said of win over Riverton Parke and West Vigo. "We played well and got excited, but then a shadow of doubt crept in. I expected a better effort."
