Ruth L. Nees Watson, 95, Terre Haute, died Friday morning, Jan. 2, 2009, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

She was a speech teacher, having taught at Indiana State University for more than 25 years.

She was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Clay County, to Charles F. Butts and Rosa E. Jeffers Butts.

Ruth was a 1931 graduate of Staunton High School, received her Bachelors degree from Northwestern University School of Speech and her Masters of Science degree from Indiana State Teachers College.

She also performed graduate work at the University of Southern California.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Zeta Phi Eta, Vanderburg Retired Teachers Association, Indiana State Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, Speech Association of America, National Education Association, I.S.U. Emeriti Faculty Women's Club and A.A.R.P.

As a resident of Westminster Village for more than 20 years, Ruth pursued her interests in reading and writing and was a member of the resident's association.

In her childhood, Ruth attended North Union United Methodist Church and later in her life, attended Catalina Methodist Church in Tucson, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Dales H. Nees in 1988, and Carlos M. Watson in 2001, her parents and brother John Berlin Butts.

Survivors include her niece Connie Walts, Evansville, nephew Fred D. Butts, Evansville, and stepson Bob Watson and wife Joan, Terre Haute.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 5, 22009, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., Terre Haute, with Dr. William Coker officiating. Burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled prior to services from 2-3 p.m., at the funeral home.
