Last year had plenty of ups and downs and as Clay County residents head into a new year, The Brazil Times wanted to know if they were optimistic about 2009.
In a recent online poll, The Times asked its readers "In your opinion, will 2009 be a better year than 2008?"
Responders had two options to choose from in the poll, yes or no.
A total of 316 respondents cast votes in the poll, with 171 (54.1 percent) saying they believed 2009 would be better than 2008.
A total of 145 responders (45.9 percent) disagreed, saying they believed 2009 would not be better.
In addition, 16 commented on the poll question.
One reader said, "We all need to have faith and hope and to believe that tomorrow will always be better than today," while another stated, "It has to be better. If it could go wrong in 2008, it did. Two $100 doors cost me $6,000 because one thing led to another for repairs. I hope I got everything done I need to on my car, too."
Another reader said, "One can only hope that with changes in the local, state and federal government offices that perhaps some meaningful changes can take place. Being a skeptic, however, I will believe all the promises when I see them kept."
Another said, "Yes, because Barack Obama will be our president," while another reader said, "Bush will no longer be president."
One reader summed it up best by stating, "Surely can't be worse."
The current Times' online poll deals with non-profit organizations.
The Times is asking its readers, "In your opinion, which non-profit organizations need the most help with funds?"
Responders are given 28 organizations to choose from, including local food pantries, Brazil Lions Club, Benevolence Ministries, Serving on the Streets, Clay County Sheriff's Department K-9 Fund, Clay County Sheriff's Department Posse, local fire departments, YMCA Summer Day Camp, Clay County Humane Society, Clay County Search and Rescue, Clay County Literacy Coalition, Clay County Community Foundation, Camp Krietenstein, Shop-With-a-Cop, United Way of the Wabash Valley, Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Children's Medical Assistance, Clay County 4-H, CASA, Clay County Senior Center, CODA, Community Parks Association, Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, Area 7 Agency for Aging and Disabled, Brazil Rotary and High School Band Boosters.
