Clay County Highway Supervisor Pete Foster told The Brazil Times repair work is underway on a bridge along County Road 1350 North. Because of the work, officials have closed the road between CR 400 and 500 W.
Initially, work was anticipated to be completed quickly, but Foster said they have had one obstacle.
"We are currently waiting for a pipe to come in as part of the repairs," he said. "We are still out there working to take out the old embankment to replace that as well."
Foster added the recent wintry weather caused major damage to the road and bridge, and the Clay County Highway Department needed to fix it immediately.
"There were two big holes in the middle of the road," Foster told The Brazil Times. "It was definitely an emergency situation because it was extremely unsafe to drive on."
The road will remain closed until the Highway Department is able to complete the repairs, which should be the middle or latter part of next week.
"We had no choice, we had to shut the road down," Foster said. "As bad as the road was, we had to protect the public from being injured or damaging their vehicles."
