Harmony Happenings was on vacation over the holidays so that I could get everything done at home. The Roaches had Christmas twice. Once was on the eve and then again when Niece Erin came home from Orlando after New Year's. She had big news to share. Boyfriend Joey Taylor had become fiancÚ Joey Taylor before she left Orlando.
Erin had opened one of her Christmas presents to find a box of licorice lumps of coal. A beautiful ring was hidden there, too. Joey got down on both knees and popped the question.
Apparently Joey's parents had known about his intentions before Erin. They visited in Orlando during Christmas week, bringing grandmother's engagement ring.
Joey's parents live in Texas. Mom is a teacher and Dad is a doctor of sports medicine. Joey graduated from Texas Tech and then moved on to work at Disney Cruise Lines. He and Erin have been dating for quite a while. John and Eva Kay have met him but the rest of the family have only conversed over the phone.
My nephew-in-law-to-be called Brother John on Christmas day and asked for his daughter's hand in marriage. John-o said it was up to her. Dads are never too anxious to give their daughters away but he agreed to escort her down the aisle on the big day.
After dinner, dessert, and opening packages on Jan. 4, we ladies poured over the several pounds of bridal magazines Erin had bought with her. Some dresses were ugly, some were ridiculous, few were pretty and feminine looking. It seemed the same designers had three styles and just did variations off that. We talked about how the bare shoulder dresses were always uncomfortable and liked how shoulder straps, or small sleeves, brought more emphasis to the face.
Erin was home for four days; three were spent looking at bridal gowns in Terre Haute and Indianapolis. Dad now knows where every bridal shop in the surrounding area is located. Shopping is not his thing but it was good to spend time with his wife and daughter. John rarely takes a day off work. He has missed only a very few days in his 30 years. Grey's survived without him.
Erin has possibly made a dress decision but Joey and she have not set a definite wedding date as yet. Erin says spring because she wants a turquoise and silver color scheme. Auntie Gail would like fall when Florida has more discounts on accommodations. Of course, you have to watch out for flying debris due to hurricanes at that time, too. That could throw wedding plans into a tizzy.
Opal Schopmeyer had a busy Christmas Day. She had 53 family members at her house and little to no water for cooking and plumbing. They all survived just fine.
Several folks at church were very appreciative of the Water Works for spending Christmas Day keeping the water trickling for most of the time. We know they would like to have been with their families, too. Thanks.
Brad and Barbara Pell announced that their son Jason was now engaged to Brooke Greenwood. Congrats to the couple. Brad and Barbara were happy about a new grandbaby, too, but I did not catch the parents or baby names. Congrats to them, too.
Phillip Gulley has a new book published. He will be at Harmony United Methodist on Feb. 17 to promote it and tell us about its contents. He will autograph copies, too.
Ladies are invited to the United Methodist Women's Meeting on Jan. 26. We will meet in Fellowship Hall at 7 p.m. Rita Jones will present the lesson and Carolyn Kumpf will be the hostess. Bring your RADA Knife orders.
