Mary Jane Rice, 90, Brazil, died at 9:11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Hendricks Regional Health, Danville, Ind.

Mary Jane was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Brazil, as the daughter of William R. and Lester Fleming Todd.

Following graduation from Brazil High School in 1933, she attended and graduated from Indiana State University with her bachelors and masters degrees.

She began her career in education, teaching in schools in Zionsville, Seymour, Van Buren and Brazil, retiring in 1984.

On March 10, 1946, she married Lt. Col. Carl Rice.

She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, Pi Gamma Mu honorary social studies sorority, Theta Alpha Phi dramatics sorority, Tri Kappa Sorority, Friends of the Library, the Literacy Coalition of Clay County, and the Retired Teachers Association of Clay County.

She attended the First United Methodist Church of Brazil.

Her greatest accomplishment was raising three daughters as a single parent. She was most proud of each of them and her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Paul Todd and his wife Clara.

She is survived by daughters Nancy Teall and husband Tom, Ann Hodson and husband Mark, and Betsy Smith and husband Robert, grandchildren Daniel, David and Robert Teall, David Hodson, Sarah Goldsberry, Jennifer Hodson, Stephanie Smith and Craig Smith, great-grandchildren Alivia and Abram Goldsberry, nieces Marian Todd Harrison and husband Don, and Janet Todd Paullus and husband Larry, great-niece Amy Boor and husband David, and Todd Harrison and wife Mandy.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Moore Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, at the First United Methodist Church, Brazil, with Rev. Tony Alstott officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
