North Clay girls and boys earn wins

The North Clay seventh-grade boys' basketball team scored a 33-17 'A' team win behind a balanced scoring effort and strong team defense.

The Knights held the Wildcats to just two points in the second quarter while taking a narrow 14-10 lead. The fourth period was where the Knights did the most damage with an 11-3 scoring edge to pull away in the victory.

Mark Underwood, Jim Mace and Ethan Whitson each had six points while Nate Newton tallied five and both Danny Kimball and Kelly Hawkins had three. Connor Ganly had two points to complete the scoring.

In the 'B' game, North Clay rolled to a 37-13 win by outscoring South Vermillion by 10 points in both the second and fourth quarters.

Tanner Wilson topped the scoring with 14 points and Zach Moore had six. Kyle Moore rang up five points and both Jeremy Maffioli and Trevor Hetrick had four. Austin Butts and Jason Sampson had two points apiece.

The Knights play their final regular season game tonight at Rockville before traveling to the WIC Tourney on Saturday at Owen Valley. North Clay takes on Brown County in the first game.

Sixth-grade girls score wins

SHAKAMAK -- North Clay's sixth-grade girls' basketball team opened its season with a pair of wins on the road at Shakamak.

The 'A' team scored a 56-24 win led by a 20-point night by Whitney Halfhill and 14 from McKenzie Kumpf. Emily Conrad contributed a 10-point game for North Clay and Abby Timberman poured in eight followed by two apiece from Mikayle Rowan and Devon McCrocklin.

In the 'B' game, the Knights rolled to a 51-18 victory paced by a balanced scoring evening.

Shea Britton scored 16 to lead the Knights followed by 11 from Sydney Buell and 10 from Hannah Minor. Mahalie Harris added six in the win followed by four from Morgan Brown and two apiece from Ramey Miller and Carli Gambil.

The Knights (1-0 overall) host Owen Valley at home on Jan. 19 beginning at 6 p.m.
