CLAY CITY -- The Clay City Eels haven't fared terribly well in tight games this season and Monday's SWIAC battle with North Daviess was much the same.

The Eels were twice within a possession of tying the game over the final minutes against the visiting Cougars, but couldn't quite finish their rally in a 45-36 defeat.

The Eels have lost four games decided by six points or fewer this season and fell to 5-10 overall.

"We lost by nine, but it was closer than you might think," coach Chris Ames commented. "It was a good game and both teams played hard. We just couldn't get over the hump."

The Eels fell behind by six points to open the fourth quarter as Jenny Dove sank a free throw, but Kelly McCullough, who came off the bench to post nine points and six rebounds, hit two free throws to answer.

"Kelly did a nice job off the bench and gave us the spark we needed," Ames said of his junior forward.

Clay City, who had problems containing 6-foot senior, Katie Doades, all night, gave up a free throw to fall behind 33-28. McCullough came right back and completed a three-point play off a lob from Devyn Bridgewater to get the Eels back to 33-31 with 5:40 to play.

The Eels turned up their defensive pressure throughout the fourth quarter, but Doades hit a contested jumper and Dove was fouled after the Cougars got two offensive rebounds on missed shots. Dove hit both free throws to push the gap to 37-31.

The Eels would get back within 39-36 after a jumper from Carmela Roeschlein and two free throws from McCullough with 2:02 remaining. Clay City grabbed a rebound and had a shot at tying the game, but missed the shot. Doades was fouled at the other end, but opened the door when she missed both of her free throws with 54 seconds.

Clay City's Brielle Drelick missed an attempt at the other end and Doades grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit both free throws to secure the game.

"Doades is a very solid post player," Ames said of the senior.

Doades had 23 points, 16 rebounds in the game and hit seven-of-10 free throws in the final quarter to ice the game.

The Eels remained close in the first half on eight of Drelick's 12 points in the game, but Doades' play enabled the Cougars to stay on top with 12 points before the break. North Daviess took an 18-16 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Roeschlein's steal and lay-in tied the game at 20-all, but Dove hit a jumper and followed by hitting an open 3-pointer before point guard Erin Wilson hit a jumper for a 27-20 lead the Cougars wouldn't relinquish.

In the JV game, the Eels got 11 points from Shaya Stephenson and eight from Danielle Gossage for a 29-11 victory.

The Eels are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Sullivan.
