He was born March 8, 1912, to George Bayard and Iva (Grim) Smith.
He graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1930. He married Marie Wright on April 13, 1935.
He worked 38 years as a coal miner for Big Ben Coal Company, Leo Girton Coal Company, Maumee Coal Company, retiring from the Peobody Coal Company in 1976.
After retiring, he ran a small engine and lawn mower repair shop out of his home.
He was a member of the Jefferson Baptist Church for 40 years, where he served as Deacon and Trustee.
He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He enjoyed all his grandchildren, watching NASCAR and IU basketball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marie E. Smith, step-mother Alma Smith and sister Helen Smith.
Survivors include daughter Wanda L. Copeland, son George L. Smith and wife Laianna, grandsons Brian J. Dyer, Barry L. Dyer and wife Patty, Ritchie Smith and wife Beth, and Rodney Smith and wife Christa, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, sister Carolyn Russell and husband Charles, brother Charles Smith and wife Jo, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Services will be at Jefferson Baptist Church in Coal City Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Lyle Pittman officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, Clay City, from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, and again Friday at the church, from 10 a.m. until time of services.
