Northview's junior varsity basketball teams set the tone for their varsity counterparts by defeating visiting South Vermillion in both girls and boys' contests on Thursday night.

The varsity teams square off this evening in Clinton with a 6 p.m. tipoff for the girls' game.

The Northview boys opened up a double-digit halftime lead and were able to hold the Wildcats at arms length for most of the second half on the way to a 44-33 victory. The girls meanwhile, held South Vermillion to eight points or fewer in cruising to a comfortable 47-19 win.

Shiloh Holifield set the tone early for the Northview boys, knocking home a 3-pointer along with Hunter Robertson as the Knights overcame a slow start for a 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Robertson really warmed up in the second period however, scoring six of his game-high 15 points to go with a pair of scores in the paint from Jordan VanHorn to build a 24-14 halftime lead.

South Vermillion wasn't going away as sophomore Zac Kempf kept his team close with an early 3-pointer, a pair of free throws and a lay-in to close the quarter with the Knights ahead 35-29.

Robertson added another pair of baskets and VanHorn scored off a nice assist from the sophomore guard to help break a small run by the Wildcats.

Kempf, who had a team-high nine points, added a pair of free throws, but VanHorn hit a free throw and Justin Rodgers cruised in for a score. Taylor Pinnick added a late bucket as the lead increased back to double-digits late.

The Northview girls made sure its defense was going to be a force against South Vermillion, forcing seven turnovers in the first quarter of their victory.

Jessica Latourette pounded the glass from the opening tip, grabbing three early boards and added a pair of field goals. Ali Sharton contributed four points with Lauren Webster and Kylee McKee each scoring two points as Northview jumped out 14-5.

South Vermillion would briefly creep back into striking distance as Jessica Lubovich scored a quick four points, but the Knights responded in kind.

Chelsey Sampson checked in and controlled the inside with a pair of blocks on the defensive end and a score in the paint. Darcy Bass scored of her baskets and Northview led 21-13 at halftime.

Northview pounced on South Vermillion in the third quarter as Alyssa Conrad got the scoring started and Sharton knocked home a 3-pointer and added a put back basket for a 28-13 lead.

LaTourette hit a free throw before Sharton completed a 10-0 run to open the half.

South Vermillion got baskets from Angellee Jammes and Ashley Farrington before Webster drove to the basket for a score and Jonnica Johnson capped the quarter with a score.
