Harmony Happenings

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

As I sit at the computer Wednesday morning, I am snowbound.

My birthday has been canceled due to inclement weather.

This year, I think I will reschedule it to May. By that time, the car should be dug out and ready to go.

Good neighbor Rick Hester has his bobcat clearing everyone's driveway.

I could not have picked a better neighborhood when I moved back to the area.

All the neighbors here on Jackson Street are priceless. Today, Rick is the star.

The birthday celebrations planned for Mario's tonight and Chaney's tomorrow are on hold. We may still get to celebrate sister-in-law Eva Kay's tomorrow but mine is a white-out. We call it our birthday week and spread it out over several days so we will still get plenty of spoiling.

The family did make it to Red Lobster Saturday night for the official birthday celebration. We arrived about 5 p.m., and the sun was so bright inside the restaurant that we had to shield our eyes. Everyone at the next row of tables was a dark silhouette in front of the windows. When the waiter closed the blinds, there was cousin Jack Roach celebrating his birthday. It was like a family reunion.

After getting our bellies full of what brother John refers to as old dead fish, we headed over to brother Mike and Karen's for ice cream and cake. We had ordered an Italian Cream Cake from Mary Fisher at Goodies Galore and topped it with butter pecan ice cream.

That was such a sin, loads of calories that a week of walking would not wear it off. But we enjoyed.

John and Christine Clark came over for cake and coffee on Monday and I sent two big pieces home with cousin Jimmy and Sandy Jenkins.

Mary's Italian Cream goes a long way. It is my favorite. Happy birthday to me. Some folks want to stop celebrating after 39, but not me. I enjoy every minute of it even if I'm snowbound.

Harmony United Methodist is holding a workshop on the "Devotional Life in the Wesleyan Tradition." Sessions will meet on Thursdays through March 12 at 7 p.m.

Contact HUMC at 448-2917 or David Brinson at 446-2487 for more information. The cost is $10.

Former ministerial intern Emma Crossen will have a birthday on Feb. 2.

We want to wish her a good day. Carolyn Kumpf said that she had received a card from Emma and she was doing well.

The intern missed the Sunday Family Nights at the Kumpf household. Carolyn said they try to keep that evening for activities with the grandkids. Emma had enjoyed it, too.

Harmony United Methodist Women met Monday evening in Fellowship Hall.

Carolyn Kumpf had a school meeting so Barbara Pell took over as hostess. She served ham and cheese soup, fresh fruit and delicious homemade cookies.

Rita Jones was unable to attend, so I took over doing the lesson. I had planned to play a DVD on the missions of UMW nationwide.

I don't know how many people it takes to run a DVD player, but we did not have enough.

We tried to get directions over the phone but the contrary contraption had a mind of its own. Apparently, the player and TV are not on speaking terms.

I will be in charge of the February lesson and getting a DVD player that works. Debbie Gottsche will be the hostess.

Many of our UMW members were out of town or not feeling well. New president Sheila Termeer conducted her first meeting and did very well.

We passed around a sheet for volunteers to do the lesson and hostess for each month throughout the year.

Due to all the absentees, we will continue filling the slots at the next meeting.

We are very low on funds even with the successful RADA knife sales. A few ideas to raise money for various mission projects were discussed. The group needs to get the book of lessons and other information about UMW, but was unsure where to purchase one.

We haven't had one for a few years. Cokesbury has them, but there are no stores close to the area. We will continue to sell the RADA knives for a while longer.

The Harmony Town Council will meet Tuesday at the Harmony Community Center, at 7:30 p.m. The center is located at the intersection of United States 40 and Border Street. Meetings are open to the public.

Happy birthday to Eva Trout Roach (29), Rachel (Pell) Fagg (30) and Sharene Wallenbrock (31).

Happy February birthdays to Emma Crossen (2), Bob Osborn (10) and happy anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Pell (31).
