During the past three years, she's served as a substitute in the Clay Community School Corporation, primarily spending time at Jackson Township Elementary School.
But recently, Nelson changed direction with her career, taking the vacant position as office manager for the Clay County Chamber of Commerce, Inc., replacing Kathy Short.
"I enjoy answering questions," Nelson told The Brazil Times. "I find it very interesting that I've met people I have not met before."
Nelson and her husband, Gordon, currently live in Parke County. However, they lived in Clay County near Colony Acres for approximately seven years prior to that.
Her husband has served as pastor at the Brazil Bible Fellowship Church for the past seven years. He is originally from Minnesota and the two met while attending school at Calvary Bible College. Dalene and Gordon have been married for 20 years.
They have four children, Nicole, 16, Shelley, 15, Dawson, 11, and Sonja, 9. All four are students in CCSC.
An avid softball and tennis player, Nelson can also be seen regularly working out at the Clay County YMCA.
She originally hails from Plainfield. The family lived in St. Anne, Ill., for five years and North Carolina for three years before coming to Clay County.
Nelson took the position with the Clay County Chamber of Commerce in the middle of December. The office is open Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m.-noon. The Chamber is located at 535 National Ave., Brazil.
"I encourage everyone to come by," Nelson said. "If I can help in any way, I would be glad to do so."
