For Kylee Thacker, Indiana State University was a good fit.
And a good choice.
On Wednesday, the Northview High School senior signed a letter-of-intent to run cross country and track at ISU.
Thacker had also expressed interested in the University of Southern Indiana (Evansville) and the University of Evansville.
"I always wanted to run Division I," Thacker said. "I really liked the campus, the coaches and the girls (on the team) are really nice."
Although she missed most of her senior year due to a stress fracture, Thacker said she's been running more and more lately in preparation for Northview's upcoming track season.
"I've been running really slow and easing my way up," she said, adding she's running approximately four miles per day right now but hopes to get to 6-7 miles per day for six days a week.
"I'm just doing progression running right now," she said.
Thacker suffered three stress fractures that caused her to miss most of her senior year in cross country. She had two in her right heel and one in her metatarsal.
Still, interest in Thacker from ISU came earlier than this past year.
"They approached me about her last year in cross country season," Northview girls' cross country coach Ryand Tucker said. "(Despite the injury), they were still excited to get her."
Tucker said Thacker's workout regimen will also benefit her heading into Division I competition.
"I think the training we do will be kind of a stepping stone for their program," he said. "I think it's a good fit for her. It's close to home and it's perfect for her. It's a good program. I think she'll fit right in with their system."
Thacker is the third Northview girls' cross country runner to sign to run at the next level. Fellow seniors, Casandra Barnett and Allie True have also signed to run at St. Mary-of-the-Woods in the fall.
"All three of my seniors were signed," Tucker said.
As a junior, Thacker finished 37th in the IHSAA Cross Country State Finals with a time of 19:46. She also was fourth at the Bedford-North Lawrence Regional and 11th at the Brown County Regional. She placed second at the Terre Haute North Sectional.
As a sophomore, Thacker placed third in sectional competition and sixth at the regional.
In track, Thacker placed 18th in the IHSAA state finals as a sophomore in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:29.
While at ISU, Thacker plans to study dietetics.
Kylee is the daughter of Tim and Della Thacker.
