Guard preparing for competition

The Northview High School winter guard, under the direction of Ruth Ann Medworth, is preparing for its first competition of the season.

The guard will travel to Pike High School Saturday to perform its show, "Zodiac!"

The guard has been fine-tuning its show since November.

The Cadet class begins at 2:50 p.m., Saturday, while the World class starts at 7:15 p.m.

Winter guard members include seniors Jessica Navel and Kayla Vincent, juniors Oakley Campbell, Emily Gottsche and Taylor Mikles, sophomores Syndey Hayes and Kendra McCrea, freshmen Brandi Allen, Lacey Bruer, Amy Cunningham, Brogan Lucas, Carson Manke, Sara Mills and Sydney Whitaker and eithgh-grader Baileigh Burns.

While the Northview Winter Guard is preparing for competition, several students from Northview High School and North Clay Middle School recently performed at Terre Haute North High School as part of the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) District Solo and Ensemble contests.

Several students earned state qualifying nods, including Erica Matson (alto saxophone, gold), Taylor Hanson (trombone, gold), Chase Shields (baritone, gold), Hallie Harbison (marimba, gold), Lauren Reberger (snare drum, gold), and Matson, Devin Ahern, Michael Ball and Clara Butts (saxophone quartet, gold).

Others competing included Katherine McDonald (trumpet, gold), Grant Meyers (trumpet, silver), Amanda Malone, Stacy Crague and Carrie Riddell (clarinet trio, silver), Brian McCluskey, Alexis Holbert and Karrissa Light (clarinet trio, gold), Shea McCoy (trumpet, silver), and Chris Swearingen (trumpet, gold).

A recital has been scheduled for 7 p.m., Feb. 17, at North Clay, which will feature all Northview and North Clay students advancing to the state contests and those that received gold division ratings at the district contest.
