* Brazil doctor returns to practice in area

There is a new doctor in town.

Dr. John Oehler is now practicing at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.

The 44-year-old father of two originally grew up in Brazil.

"I moved to Brazil in 1976," he said. "Since then, I have called this town my home."

Oehler graduated from Brazil High School in 1982. He then went to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

"At that time, Rose-Hulman only offered four engineering degrees," he said. "I wanted something else, and like a lot of young adults, I wanted adventure."

It was then he transferred to University of Arizona and received a degree in Mining Engineering.

"As a child, I liked digging in the dirt and playing with dump trucks, why not do it as an adult," he said with a laugh.

For approximately 10 years he worked in the engineering field. However, in 1996 he had enough fun playing in the dirt and decided premedical school was his dream.

"While I attended Rose and the University of Arizona, I took a few of the medical classes," Oehler said. "After working in the engineering field I decided to try to go into medicine because I like talking to people and I like problem solving."

He graduated from Des Moines University in 2000. From there he moved to Portsmouth Ohio.

While Oehler was still in medical school he met Kurt Warner while Warner was playing arena football for the Iowa Barnstormers.

"I met Kurt and his wife at church, I sat next to him in the newcomers class, they are both very nice," he said. "You never know who you will meet and what they will go on to do in their life."

While in Portsmouth, he met his wife Carol. After five years of practice there he was given an opportunity that he says he couldn't pass up.

"I conned my wife into coming to Brazil," he said with a laugh. "All of her family is back in Ohio, but most of mine was here and I missed my father and cousins and other family members."

He is the son of Dr. Curt Oehler a cardiologist in Brazil. John and Carol have a 6-year-old son named Ian, who attends Staunton Elementary and John has a 19-year-old son, Nicholas, from a previous marriage.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to have a practice in Brazil," he said. "I like that I have the opportunity to build relationships in the community."

Dr. Oehler is located at 1214 E. National Ave., Suite 90A (medical office building) his office hours are 8 a.m.-5p.m., Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-noon, Friday. For more information call 442-2900.
