Plainfield cruises past visiting Northview

PLAINFIELD -- The Northview Knights haven't had much luck this season against teams in their sectional.

The Knights came into Saturday's road game with four losses against just one win versus the five other teams in the Class 4A Terre Haute North Sectional.

When they got back on the bus following the game, the Knights had lost their fifth such game, this one a 66-51 defeat to the Quakers.

Coach Ernie Maesch wasn't so much disappointed in the loss to an 11-5 Plainfield squad, but by his team's effort on the road.

"I thought we had the wrong five guys listening to what we wanted to do," Maesch said. "The guys we had playing at the end of the game were the ones that played the way we taught. We've just got guys that take plays off. At least one every time down the floor and when you play a team like Plainfield, you're not going to win."

Before the game, Plainfield honored coach Dana Greene, who is retiring following the season after a 21-year career that included three sectional, two regional and a state championship in 1999.

The Knights had more problems with the other Quaker that was honored.

Blake Metcalf, a 6'9" senior center, was honored as one of approximately 1,500 high school basketball players to be nominated for the McDonald's All-American Game.

He made his impact felt immediately, teaming with classmate Brian Mucho for 19 first quarter points.

Metcalf's size combined with his teammates active defense almost completely shut down the Knights' inside game. Caleb Mershon and Clint Reynolds each hit 3-pointers during the first quarter, but Metcalf was having his way in the post.

Metcalf hit five-of-seven shots from the field during the opening period and Mucho scored a three-point play and added a pair of 3-pointer as Plainfield pulled out to a 24-11 lead.

Northview was forced into five-of-17 shooting during the first quarter and the Knights dug themselves a hole that was too deep.

The Knights played nearly even with the Quakers in the second quarter with Trent Lancaster scoring eight of his team-high 14 points and Austin Akers adding nine in the first half. However, Northview still was facing a 40-26 deficit at the halfway point.

In the third quarter, the Quakers simply outhustled and outplayed the Knights in most situations and appeared to simply want the game more.

Maesch was quick to note that his team was lacking in the effort category.

"We didn't do our defensive assignments and gave them wide open '3's," Maesch said. "We didn't box out on free throws. I think we've got a couple of guys that would rather be cool than do the little things. The tough things it takes to win."

The Quakers got to nearly every loose ball and beat the Knights back down the court for several lay-ups in the third quarter when Northview had a chance to make a run.

Three-pointers by the Knights' Caleb Mershon and Clint Reynolds might have given Northview a momentum boost, but each time, a wide-open Quaker answered with a 3-point of their own.

Plainfield opened the second half by stringing together an 11-3 run to put the contest out of reach at 51-39, midway through the third quarter.

In the fourth period, Maesch subbed his starters out midway through the quarter with the Knights trailing 62-40. The Knights bench then got a pair of 3-pointers from Jordan Allen, one from Hunter Robertson and a bucket from Jordan Keller to end the game on an 11-4 run.

Metcalf finished the game with 20 points and 11 rebounds with Mucho adding 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Northview (6-11) faces South Putnam at home on Thursday evening beginning with a 6 p.m. JV game.
