The American Red Cross has been notified to help a Brazil family whose home was damaged by a fire Monday afternoon.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., members of the Brazil City Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire at Steve Durbin's residence at 621 N. Vandalia St.

Although firefighters were able to contain the fire within 15-20 minutes, Assistant Fire Chief Roy Kellar told The Brazil Times firefighters stayed on the scene for a little over an hour to make sure there were no hot spots within the walls or attic.

However, Kellar said the living room and kitchen areas of the home were heavily damaged by smoke and fire, while the rest of the home sustained minor smoke damage. "The Red Cross has been contacted to assist the family with a place to stay and help them with clothing," Kellar said, who estimates the damage could potentially be $12,000-$15,000.

Local officials are investigating the fire, which is not considered suspicious in nature, to help determine the cause.
