The American Legion Post 2 Auxiliary is asking the public to donate items for soldiers who are currently deployed in Iraq.

Local soldiers from the 138th Quartermaster Support Company recently left from Brazil to Camp Atterbury to prepare for deployment in Iraq.

The American Legion Post 2 Auxiliary has started a fund for the soldiers and is continually taking donations to maintain the needs for the soldiers.

According to Auxiliary Treasurer Tammy Young, the soldiers recently requested sports equipment, such as baseballs, bats, gloves, bad mitten sets, volleyballs, Frisbees, etc., along with playing cards, dice and reading material. The Auxiliary is attempting to gather these items as quickly as possible to send them overseas to the soldiers.

Young said the fundraiser began Tuesday and is an ongoing event.

"We could be taking stuff for three-four months," she said. "As long as (the soldiers) want it and as long as we can share it."

Young suggested smaller items be left in packaging, in order for them to pass through customs much easier.

Those interested in donating items of any kind are encouraged to send a check payable to the American Legion Auxiliary Soldiers Fund, 1013 S. Forest Ave., Brazil, Ind., 47834.
