He was born Dec. 22, 1924, in Center Point, the son of Henry Franklin and Minnie Olive Brand Newport.
He graduated from Ashboro High School.
He served in the U.S. Army for a short time and was honorably discharged due to a back injury.
He worked for Commercial Solvents, later known as IMC, first as a warehouseman, a dockworker and then later a machinist.
He retired after 43 years of service.
He was a member of the Peniel United Methodist Church.
He was married to Madonna McKenzie Newport and she preceded him in death Dec. 29, 2005.
Survivors include son David and wife Jackie, Brazil, nieces Rhonda Jenkins, Tammy Sinders, Cheri Weber and Pam Chamberlain and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and brother Frank Royce Newport.
Services will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Richard Pippin officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m.
