Pat Laubacher, 83, California, formerly of Brazil, died in her home Feb. 24, 2009, surrounded by her five children and loved ones.

Pat was well-known and well-loved in the community for her many years of teaching at Santa Clara Elementary School and as an active member of the Santa Clara Parish in Oxnard, Calif.

She lived her life with a sense of clarity and purpose, expressed through her deep faith, her love of family and her passion for teaching children.

Pat was born in 1926 to Dan and Kathryn Ferry, Brazil, and was the third youngest of nine children.

Pat's family remains grateful to Dan and Jack, two of her brothers, who traveled to be with her, holding her hand and sharing stories of their growing up years.

Pat attended Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute, and completed her teaching degree at Fontbonne College, St. Louis.

In 1956, Pat moved from St. Louis to Camarillo, Calif. She was hired as the first lay teacher at St. Mary Magdalen Elementary School in Camarillo. Pat's children are thankful to Bob Higgins, who arranged a blind date between Pat and her future husband, Edward George Laubacher, who was instantly smitten with this petite and sharp-witted Midwesterner.

It was a generational romance between Ed and Pat, one that nurtured five children and many loving memories. Ed preceded Pat in death on June 8, 1988. Their infant son James Vincent died on Nov. 1, 1966.

Pat's passion for teaching was lifelong, and her classroom filled with second-graders was her true joy. She taught for more than 30 years, primarily at Santa Clara, but also at St. Anthony's Elementary School in Oxnard.

Pat never "retired," and continued to touch many people through her service to the school and her parish.

Pat is survived by brothers Ed, Dan and Jack, and their families, and sister Rosemary's children Nita, Dan and their families. In addition, her children, Katie Collins and her husband Kirt, and their children Haley, Ben, Annie and Ivee, Martha Laubacher, Trish Sparks and her husband Glenn, and their children James and Nicholas, Ned Laubacher and his wife Stephanie, and their children Kyra, Charlotte, Callie and Will, and Joan Mary Laubacher and her partner Sharon Collinge, and their son Jake.

Visitation will take place at James A. Reardon-Payton Mortuary, 511 N. A St., Oxnard, Calif., from noon-5 p.m., today.

The vigil and Rosary will take place at Santa Clara Church later this evening at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009.

The family welcomes you to attend a reception to take place at the Santa Clara Elementary School auditorium following the funeral and graveside service.

A memorial donation may be made to Santa Clara Elementary School, 324 S. E. St., Oxnard, Calif., 93030.
