The Wabash Valley Wrestling Club had some big results over the weekend, scoring 12 wins or second-place finishes in a Crawfordsville Tourney on Sunday.

Eighteen wrestlers competed in the tourney with the club taking six overall champions to go with six runner-up finishes.

Braeden Wharton was the winner in the Pee Wee 45-pound division and Cale McCoy won the Novice 75-pound class. Jacob Hendrich took a title in the Novice 100-pound class and Austin Bell, Brandon Mikesell and Larry Shaffer each won in the Cadet Class.

I feel like our club is really starting to grow and interest is the highest it has ever been at the club level," Dan Mikesell said of the club. "Some of our kids with two or more years of experience are really starting to do some nice things on the mat. It is really nice to start to see some consistency with the same kids coming out and learning the fundamentals.

Braden Nevins (kneeling) goes in for a takedown against Evan Hendrich during drills at practice on Wednesday.
"Larry Shaffer had a great weekend. He won the Super 13 on Saturday and then won the tournament on Sunday. He is a cadet, so he had to wrestle a couple of high school kids on Sunday and beat both of them," added Mikesell. "Austin Bell and Brandon Mikesell pretty much dominated their weight classes as did Jacob Hendrich. Cale McCoy is doing some nice things and really wrestles with a lot of intensity for a little guy. Braeden Wharton won his first tournament, it is awesome to watch those five-year-olds wrestle and win, their smiles are worth a million bucks."

Second-place finishes went to Preston Nuckols in the Bantam 50-pound division and Evan Hendrich in the Bantam 60-pound class. Cadet runner-ups went to Baylor Girton at 140 pounds and JR Robertson in the Heavyweight Division. Kyle Schafer was second in the Novice 105-pound class and at Intermediate 95, Evan Dutrow was second.

"I was glad we had some high school aged kids and middle school kids attend, hopefully we can get some more of them to make a commitment," Mikesell said. " I was very pleased with the effort and the skill that many of these kids showed on the mat today. I was also happy to see such a good number of participation."

The kindergarten through fifth-grade portion of the club is 40 strong this season.
