Theatre gears up for 'Calamity Jane'

Rehearsals are ongoing for the Community Theatre of Clay County's upcoming dinner production of the musical comedy, "Calamity Jane."

The musical will be performed March 12-14, at the Lark Theatre building, 8 E. National Ave., Brazil.

The show includes 22-plus actors, singers and dancers from Clay County and the surrounding area. Some participants are driving from as far as one hour away just to be a part of the musical.

In addition to the lead parts of Calamity Jane, portrayed by Julia Kapke, and Wild Bill Hickock, portrayed by T.J. Sneddon, other characters include Brazil resident Rod Clarke as Lt. Danny Gilmartin, and Katie Brown as Carol McConnell.

There are more than 20 additional characters featuring cowboys, soldiers and their wives, prospectors, chorus girls and more.

For those unfamiliar with the show, "Calamity Jane," is a musical Western set in old Deadwood City, S.D. Deadwood City's two most famous peace officers, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock, get involved helping local saloon operator Henry Miller bring a famous singing star to Deadwood from Chicago.

The show was made into a popular movie with Doris Day portraying Calamity Jane. It features songs such as "My Secret Love," "I Can Do Without You," and "The Black Hills of Dakota."

The spring musical presented by the theatre each year is one of its most popular. "Calamity Jane" is sure to entertain audiences of all ages.
