She was born Dec. 6, 1914, the youngest daughter of John L. Brothers and Cansada Horton Brothers of Route 2, Clay City. She was a graduate of Clay City High School with the class of 1932 and a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College with a degree in Elementary Education.
Fern taught in the Harrison Township Schools for over 30 years and had previously taught in the Elkhart Schools for one year.
On Sept. 3, 1942, she married Herman R. Davis, who preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1986. She was also preceded by her parents, three brothers, Arthur, Wade and Wilbur (Bill), and two sisters, Mary Wright and Odena Rea.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clay City, the Order of the Eastern Star, Indiana State Teachers Association, the N.E.A. and the National Retired Teachers Association. Fern was the organist for Schoppenhorst Funeral Home for 21 years.
She is survived by two nephews, Bradley Brothers, Alexandria, Va., and Gregory Brothers, The Woodlands, Texas, two great nieces, a great nephew and two special friends, Betty Jane Hiatt and Polly Booe.
Services will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home Monday, March 16, 2009, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Don Yegerlehner officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, from 5-7 p.m., and again Monday from 8 a.m., until time of services. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Clay City First United Methodist Church.
