"The American Cancer Society reaches out to everyone whose lives have been affected by cancer," Chairperson Janice Piatt told The Brazil Times. "This event is part of the Show Us Your Hope, which allows people to show their passion and resolve to end this terrible disease."
Show Us Your Hope ACS events are organized demonstrations/activities that allow a community to make a powerful statement about its commitment to end cancer and raise awareness about Relay For Life.
Organizers say there are lots of ways to participate in "Paint the Town Purple," including:
* Homeowners can decorate their homes or front yards with purple balloons, ribbons and homemade yard signs,
* Neighborhoods can tie purple ribbons around tress, utility poles and fences,
* Individuals can wear purple clothing,
* Motorists can tie purple ribbons on their vehicle antennas or door handles, and
* Businesses can create purple window displays.
"We hope that everyone will help us paint the town purple by wearing or displaying purple this Thursday and again on Tuesday, April 14," Piatt said. "This is important because we need to bring community awareness, and excitement, about the upcoming Relay event in May."
The goal of this year's Relay event is to raise $42,000 during the 12-hour fundraiser, scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., on May 8-9, at the Clay County YMCA.
Piatt said individuals (and businesses) interested in participating or creating teams in the American Cancer Society's 2009 Clay County Relay For Life still have time to do so.
"The more the merrier," Piatt said. "We have lots of fun. It's a time for our community to come together and unite for a common cause. We hope to see you there."
