Garry Howard, who runs the American Aikido Institute in Brazil, is now offering businesses the chance to learn necessary self-defense techniques with his Personal Defense Solutions program.
The current rates for the programs are $295 for one hour, $495 for two hours and $695 for three hours.
Though it does fall under the umbrella term of self-defense class, Howard said he feels the program is set apart because it focuses more on building mental awareness as opposed to being purely physical.
"This is more than a self-defense course," he said. "Most of these courses are 'kick here, punch here.' That's it. What I try to do is focus on the mental prowess of self-defense."
Personal Defense Solutions focuses on three areas, including prevention, personal awareness and physical self-defense. Howard said he hoped that people would learn enough about the first two steps so they would never have to resort to the third.
The program is designed for specific defense needs that may arise for the organizations that request services. Entities that have made use of Howard's class in the past include banks, hospitals and churches.
He has been conducting seminars since the early 90s. Last year, Howard retired from a position in the postal service and says retirement has freed him up enough to allow him to refine the program. He added it has helped make his scheduling process more flexible.
In addition to his martial arts training, Howard has 30 years of law enforcement experience. He currently serves as Knightsville Town Marshal. He said during his time in law enforcement, he has seen every imaginable crime, ranging from rape to murder, and these experiences, mixed with his martial arts knowledge, helped him create a more decisively effective program.
"I've seen everything you can think of," he said. "It has given me the chance to take what I have learned and bring in methods that I know work to create the best program possible."
Howard said the ultimate goal of his work is to let people know of all the options available to them in the self-defense realm.
"I see a specific need for this education," he said. "I have a desire to educate and keep people from becoming victims. Making people aware of the options they have is my personal quest."

If an organization wishes to have a seminar that lasts longer than three hours, Howard said a price would be worked up on a specific basis.
