CLAY CITY -- Clay City High School students filled the fellowship hall of First United Church of Christ with smiles Thursday, in anticipation of receiving their academic letter awards.

"We are so lucky and blessed, to have such a great community that supports us," Clay City High School Principal Jeff Bell said.

He read two letters to the crowd, one from a representative of the Martinsville Police Department and the other from the principal of Jac-Cen-Del.

"I was so impressed with the positive reinforcement of your crowd and the continued support towards your players that even before the game began they were considered winners," Bell read from the letter of the Martinsville Police Department. "If class counted at the end of the day, you guys would've been cutting down the net."

After parts of the second letter were read to the quiet room, Bell looked at the students as parents and faculty gathered.

"I cannot express to you how truly special it was to receive these letters and know the integrity of our community," he said. "These letters speak the truth, we are winners."

Those in attendance also listened to Bill Siderewicz, former Martinsville High School Football Coach and member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame as he spoke about the "honor package."

"If you have the opportunity take it," he said. "Be proud of your accomplishments, preserve, discipline, passion, information and opportunity. You already made it this far, keep pushing yourself."
