He was born Jan. 28, 1955, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Chester and Beulah Bays. Mr. Bays graduated from Rosedale High School and later from Ivy Tech with a degree in Automotive Technology. He served his country in the United States Air Force for 19-and-a-half years and later in the Army National Guard until retiring. He worked as a mill operator for Novelis in Terre Haute. He married Elaine Wallace March 15, 1980. In his free time he enjoyed spending time with his family and spending time outdoors.
Mr. Bays was preceded in death by his father Chester Bays, son and daughter-in-law Benjamin Allen and Faith (Ronaldson) Bays, sister Peggy Bays, brother Tim Bays, and mother-in-law Valarie Wallace.
He is survived by his wife Elaine, four children: Tammy Bays, Terre Haute, Karla Bays, Indianapolis, Jamie Bays, Brazil and Bobbi Jo, Clinton, a grandson Michael, mother Beulah Bays, Terre Haute, siblings Marcia Strait and husband Jim, Marshall, Ill., Chester and wife Josey Bays, Terre Haute, Barbara Hiner, Salt Lake City, Utah, Sandra Spaulding, Sugar City, Idaho, Steve Bays, Rosedale, Ind., Rex and wife Janice Bays, Marshall, Ill., Mark and wife Helen Bays, Terre Haute, and Penny Burgess, Terre Haute, as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Services for Mr. Bays will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 10 a.m., with Pastor Gary Scroggins officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, from 4-8 p.m., and again Saturday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
