Thursday, April 2, 2009

Staff Report

ROCKVILLE -- The Clay City Eels weren't able to get the key hit when they needed in their softball season opener on Thursday evening.

The Rockville Rox scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 decision over Clay City.

The Eels scored their lone run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Shelby Targett. Clay City had a chance at a rally in the sixth inning when the Eels loaded the bases with one out, but couldn't come up with the run scoring hit.

Targett went the distance for the Eels, striking out 10 batters and allowing just three hits, but walked six batters.

Clay City's Tasha Collenbaugh went 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and scored the lone run for the Eels. Shaya Stevenson had a hit along with Karen Treadway and Allie Miller.

Kayla Wilson came in to relieve Lindsay Greene in the fifth inning and got the win for the Rox.

Clay City (0-1 overall) is back in action on Saturday with three games beginning with a 9:30 a.m. contest with Terre Haute South. The Eels will also take on Union (Dugger) and Floyd Central.
