The Wabash Valley was well represented in this year's Associated Press All-State basketball teams.

In fact, a pair of Northview athletes were honored as Spring Raines received High Honorable Mention status and Austin Akers was on the Honorable Mention list for the AP Team.

Raines completed one of the top prep careers in the Valley after finishing with more than 1,500 career points for the Knights. She finished her senior year by averaging 24 ppg. while also leading the Knights in rebounding at 8.6 per game and assists with more than three per contest. She hit 56 3-pointers this season and knocked down 36 percent from long-range. Raines also hit 77 percent of her shots from the free throw line and 43 percent from the field.

Head coach LuAnne Anderson held that position during Raines final season, but discussed the nomination during a recent interview.

"I think this is a great honor for her and our program," Anderson said. "Spring has proven that she is one of the best players in the state. I am not sure that I will have another opportunity to coach a player like Spring -- players like her don't come around very often. I always knew that if our team needed to score, she would step up and get the job done. She totally dominated games for us this year."

Raines also was elected to compete in the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top-60 workout on March 15.

Spring Raines was named a High Honorable All-State pick after a career in which she scored more than 1,500 points.
Currently, Raines has not made a decision on where she will play collegiately.

Terre Haute South's Dragana Grbic was a Second Team All-State pick and will attend Butler. Owen Valley's Nickole and Heather Gonser were also High Honorable Mention choices and will continue to play at the University of Indianapolis. Megan Gambill of Union (Dugger) was also on the High Honorable Mention list.

Akers took his game to another level this season and was the player that every team had to plan for when facing the Knights.

His scoring was the main focus during the early portions of the season, but the latter half of the year saw his ability to distribute the ball catch up and open plenty of coaches eyes. Akers was also one of the Knights better rebounders.

"It's a great honor for Austin and the program," coach Ernie Maesch said. "He played at an incredibly high level this season. Hopefully some other players see that All-State honor and see what kind of work it takes to reach that level."

Akers is also expected to be named as one of the state's top-60 seniors and will very likely compete in the workouts, which are typically attended by a number of college coaches. Akers already has some offers, but has not made a final decision at this point.

While Maesch noted that the final list has not been announced for the Top-60 workout, he felt that Akers was a very deserving candidate.

"I think he'll get a chance to show coaches that he's just as good as any other Division I athlete that is there," Maesch said.

A pair of IU recruits were named to the First Team list as Bloomington South's Jordan Hulls and Derek Elston of Tipton lead the way. D.J. Byrd of North Montgomery will attend Purdue and Scott Wood of Marion is heading to North Carolina State. DeShaun Thomas of state champion Fort Wayne Luers, is the lone junior on the team and is an Ohio State commit.

Terre Haute South's Jake Odum and John Michael Jarvis each are on the High Honorable Mention list along with Rockville's R.J. Mahurin. Both Mahurin and Odum are Indiana State recruits. Terre Haute North's Justin Gant joined Akers on the Honorable Mention list.
