"The purpose of National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to develop character in the students' of secondary schools," Northview sponsor and English teacher Michelle Tracy said.
Students are invited to apply, but they must have at least a 3.5 GPA and excel in academics.
Applications ask for general information. There are essay questions that are designed respond to strengths in academics, character and leadership of each student. A faculty advisory committee reviews the applications, then decisions are made and given to the sponsor.
"Our goals include promoting scholarship within the school, helping students at the school, and involving ourselves with local organizations in the community to volunteer for community service," Tracy said. "We are to leave this school and community a little better than it was before we came."
The honor society recently put together a staff basketball game between Clay City Jr./Sr. High School and Northview High School with proceeds from the event going to Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis, in honor of a former student.
"It was a great opportunity for two schools to come together and have fun while raising money for a great cause," she said.
The honor members tutor elementary, middle and high school students and Tracy said this spring they will conduct a community service project with a local organization.
"The most valuable experience students gain from the organization, in my opinion, is the opportunity to work with others as a team to help those in need in a variety of ways," she said. "The students are given an opportunity to see the results of their hard work in academics as well as their personal decisions."
