"Unfortunately, we have experienced a record number of home fires in both February and March," Chapter Executive Director Carol Stevens said.
"Twenty-eight local families lost their homes to fire in February and an additional 23 local families lost their homes to fire in March."
Last fiscal year, the Red Cross spent more than $80,000 responding to 134 disasters in the Wabash Valley providing more than 557 individuals with the means for temporary lodging, food, clothing, critical medications and mental health support. Most of the disasters the Red Cross responds to locally are home fires.
The goal for this years Classic is to raise at least $15,000 to help provide disaster relief and emergency services to local military families throughout Clay, Greene, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana and Edgar County in Illinois.
The lead sponsors for this year's event are Time Warner Cable, Riddell National Bank and York Chevrolet.
