The Wabash Valley Wrestling Club has garnered some impressive honors following some national honors by a couple of its wrestlers recently.
Beau Judd, who is also a member of the Northview High School team, was honored as a Cadet Heavyweight All-American last weekend after placing sixth in the nation at the USA Folkstyle Nationals held at the University of Northern Iowa.
"He had a great showing and is the first person from our club to be a Cadet All-American," said coach Dan Mikesell. "He was an All-American as schoolboy two years ago."
Judd won his first two matches in competition before falling by a 5-3 decision in the semifinals. Judd then wrestled his way back to complete the sixth-place finish.
"It was a good accomplishment for him and should give him more confidence heading into the season next year," Mikesell said.
Judd wasn't alone in earning national honors as Jacob Hendrich, a fourth grader at Staunton Elementary, had a strong tournament at the elementary nationals held in Tennessee.
Hendrich wrestled to a 3-6 mark in the 95-pound weight class over a two-day period.
Hendrich defeated wrestlers from North Carolina, Iowa and Ohio in the tourney.
"He represented our club very well as all of his matches were close," Mikesell said. "He lost by three or less points in all but one of his defeats."
Hendrich was invited to be on the team after his accomplishments at the state level. Only two wrestlers per weight class were invited to participate.
"It was a great experience and opportunity for him to wrestle against some of the best in the country at his age and weight class," Mikesell said.
