The Northview tennis team had their season opening match delayed this week due to Monday rain showers, but they got started on the right foot with a 5-0 sweep of Linton on Wednesday night.

The singles players lost a total of just four games over three matches as Allie Melega took a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 versus Abbey Burris. The Knights' Bonnie Froderman took a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Sarah Henstey, 6-2, 6-1. In the No. 3 singles match, Hannah Pond swept past Amy Goodman by a 6-0, 6-0 score.

"I'm proud of the girls for winning tonight. We had several girls playing in their first varsity match and a few playing in different positions," Northview coach Emily Goff said.

The Knights had plenty of success in doubles play too as Lauren Reberger teamed with Kaci Khert for a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the Miners' Olivia Wells and Olivia Villian. In the No. 2 doubles slot, Allison Stearley and Carli Coughanowr took a 6-0, 6-3 victory to complete the varsity's opening win.

Northview also swept the junior varsity matches as Conner Reinoehl won an 8-0 singles match and the team of Briana Cook and Lizzie Emmert won 8-1. Alyssa Clarke and Kylee Orr teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles.

With the opening victory Goff was pleased with the win, but also saw room for improvement.

"There is a lot we still need to work on and will hopefully continue to improve throughout the season," Goff said.

The Knights (1-0 overall) travel to Terre Haute South this evening at 5 p.m.
