Northview and Clay City Eels compete in track and field

TERRE HAUTE -- The Northview track and field teams swept West Vigo on Thursday night as the boys' team won 80 to 51 and the girls took a lopsided 99 to 33 decision.

The girls' squad took the top spot in all but two events in Terre Haute with a strong overall performance.

On the track, Casandra Barnett (1,600) and Kylee Thacker (3,200) were winners in the distance events with Shelby Sands winning the 800 for the Knights. All three girls teamed up with Allie True to take the 3,200 relay in a time of 10:56.

Krista Stearley was the 200-meter winner and placed second in the 100 meters behind teammate Jessica Thackers' winning time of 13.5. Elle Kleiber completed the sweep for the Knights. She also helped complete the 1-2-3 finish in the 200 with a runner-up finish ahead of Sara Niehaus. Tara Summers finished second in the 400 ahead of Caleena Meyers.

Northview's 1,600-meter relay team of Jennifer Junker, Summers, Corey Laue and Meyers was a winner in 4:43. The 400 meter relay team was also a winner with Jessica Thacker, Stearley, Niehaus and Annie Smiley crossing the finish line in 53.1.

The Knights were just as dominating in field events as Samantha Solomon won both the shot and discus with a throw of 33-6 in the shot and a winning heave of 108-0 in the discus.

Kalyn Beil was the runner-up in the discus with Caitlin Stemm third in the shotput.

Shandi Travis cleared 4-10 to win the high jump to edge past Summers.

Summers was the winner in the long jump with a leap of 14-2 to lead the sweep ahead of teammate, Niehaus and Thacker. Smiley was the pole vault winner to edge out Jessica Thacker.

In the boys' meet, Conor Strain won the 1,600 (4:41), 3,200 (11:00) and 800 (2:12) and was part of the winning 3,200-relay team along with Damon Hyatt, Ryan Lutes and Chris Brown.

Joel Whittington was also a multiple event winner, taking a victory in the 110 hurdles in 15.2, the 300 hurdles (42.3) and claimed the 200 meters in 23.9.

In the 400 meters, Michael Flora took the top spot in 54.1 to beat out Hyatt at the line.

Dillion Reynolds won the high jump for Northview by clearing 5-6 and the Knights swept the shotput with Mitch Haviland winning with a throw of 44-10 to beat out teammates Jordan Keller and Jordan VanHorn. In the discus, VanHorn was the winner with a throw of 120-4 to edge Keller for top honors.

Jared Royer was the winner in the pole vault to clearing 11-6.

Clay City track and field

SULLIVAN -- The Clay City track teams hit the road for a meet at Sullivan on Thursday night with the boys coming out second behind the host Arrows, 81 to 70 with Bloomfield in third with 16 points.

Sullivan won the girls' meet with 76 followed by Bloomfield with 44 and the Eels third with 43 points.

Top finishers for the Clay City girls included an 800-meter win by Carmela Roeschlein and a win by Brielle Drelick in the high jump.

In the boys' meet, the Eels excelled in the distance events with Parker Modesitt and Conner Modesitt going 1-2 in the 3,200 meters and Jesse Vansickle claiming the 1,600 ahead of Parker Modesitt.

In the 800 meters, Vansickle was second ahead of Parker Modesitt and the Eels teamed to take the 3,200 relay.

In the 110 hurdles, Jared Tiefel and Orry Heffner were second and third with Ethan Shaw the runner-up in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Heffner was also third in that event.

In field events, Devon Hall was the winner in the discus with a throw of 137-4 to beat teammate, Jacob Payne, who was also second in the shotput ahead of Hall.

In the long jump, Kyle Seymour was second for the Eels and Levi Seymour was the runner-up in the 200 meters.

The Clay City track teams are back in action at home on Tuesday when they host Northview and White River Valley at 5 p.m.
