Herman L. Leichty, 84, Clay City, formerly of West Plains, Mo., died at 5:30 a.m., April 26, 2009, following an extended illness.
He was born in Clay County Dec. 7, 1924, to Albert and Nellie Schiele Leichty. He graduated from Clay City High School.
Following high school, he began working for IBM in Greencastle as a press operator, retiring in 1986.
He married Geneva Alsip in Clay County Dec. 7, 1963.
Following his retirement, he and Geneva moved to West Plains, Mo., where she passed away in 1991.
After her death, Herman returned to Clay County.
He has been a resident of Holly Hill Health Care for the past seven years. Herman was a member of Faith Southern Baptist Church, the National Rifle Association and the Elks Lodge in West Plains, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Nellie Leichty, wife Geneva Leichty, and sister Rosellen M. Olds.
Survivors include sister Alberta J. Fagg, Clay City, nephew Tommy J. Zurcher and wife Mary Ruth, Center Point, great-nephew Shane Zurcher, Brazil, great-niece Jonna J. Stout and husband Henry, Beech Grove.
Visitation will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home Wednesday, April 29, 2009, from 4-8 p.m. Graveside services will be Friday, May 1, 2009, in West Plains, Mo.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clay City Food Pantry.
