Lewis dismissed from IU's football team

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

BLOOMINGTON -- Indiana receiver Kellen Lewis has been dismissed from the football team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Coach Bill Lynch says he was "disappointed to have to make this decision" but that it is in the best interest of the team.

Lewis was a second-team All-Big Ten selection as a quarterback in 2007 but was suspended for four months before the 2008 season. The absence cost him practice time in the spring and summer, forcing him to win back the starting job from Ben Chappell last season. This spring, Lynch moved Lewis to receiver and designated Chappell the starting quarterback.

Lewis, a 6-foot-1 senior from Jacksonville, Fla., still holds IU career records with 565 completions and 48 touchdown passes, is second with 8,072 total yards and third with 6,395 yards passing.
