Myrtle Virginia Sutherland, 83, Center Point, went to see her Lord April 30, 2009, at 9 p.m., at Terre Haute Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Providence, Ky., to Granville and Charity (Stanley) Batchelor.

At the age of 15, she married Ralph Sutherland Sr., on Sept. 25, 1942, in Brazil.

She helped her husband operate Sutherland and Sons, Inc., as well as a family farm in Hoosierville, and the Long Branch Tavern on the corner of Depot and Church streets, in Brazil.

She loved mushroom hunting, fishing and crocheting. She will be remembered for her ability to hunt mushrooms and her love of flowers and nature. She will also be remembered by her family and friends as "Big Red." She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Oscar Preston Sutherland, sisters Bernice Dickerson and Jessie David, brothers James Batchelor, Ted Batchelor and Ben Batchelor, and dear friend Esther Freeman.

She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 66 years, Ralph Sutherland Sr., children Ralph Sutherland Jr., and companion Barb Hayes, Knightsville, Delores "Dea" McMahon and husband Jim, Brazil, Patsy Long and husband John, Center Point, Roy Sutherland and wife Sandra, Center Point, Nellie Cozzi and companion Skip Taylor, Brazil, "Granny" of Preston Sutherland and wife Jeri, Brazil, John Sutherland and companion Dee, Terre Haute, Carl Sutherland and wife Susan, Brazil, Jason Sutherland and companion Becca, Brazil, Tonia Tucker and husband Jim, Brazil, Jim McMahon II and wife Lisa, Brazil, Brad Frye, Brazil, Darin Frye, Brazil, Tami Cooper and husband Gary, Reelsville, Joni Young and husband Larry, Reelsville, Melissa Moreland and husband Tom, Center Point, Kimberly "Kimmy" Allsup and fiancÚ Brian, Brazil, and Kelly Smith and husband Scott, Brazil, "Great Granny" of 31 and "Great-Great Granny" of eight, sister Hattie Northern, Indianapolis, and sister-in-law Opal Mitchell, Mesa, Ariz., as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members and her beloved dog Dinky.

Services will be at French Funeral Home, at 1 p.m., Monday, May 4, 2009, with Pastor Larry Richmond officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday, from 11 a.m. until time of services.

At her request, cremation services will be provided.
