He was born July 31, 1929, in Clay County, to John A. Sr. and Gladys (Bain) Metz.
Jack attended Van Buren High School. On Feb. 21, 1951, he joined the United States Army. He served as an infantryman in Korea until being honorably discharged at Camp Carson Colorado Feb. 12, 1953. On Oct. 1, 1954, he married Carolyn "Sue" Moore. Jack farmed for several years and later worked for Arktex until their closing. Most recently he worked for Allison Transmission, Indianapolis, until retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Knightsville Masonic Lodge No. 409. In his free time he enjoyed watching truck pulls, racing, tinkering in the shop and restoring antique vehicles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Carolyn Feb. 24, 2009, and a brother in childhood.
Survivors include two sons: Fred Metz and wife Lisa and David Metz, all of Brazil, two granddaughters, Jessica Metz and Sami Metz, brothers: Jim Metz and wife Esther and Bill Metz, sister Norma Nelson and husband Paul, mother-in-law Lorene Russell, sisters-in-law Darlene Moore and Linda Sheese, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Services will be at French Funeral Home Tuesday, May 10, 2009, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Dick McShanog officiating. Burial will follow at Calcutta Cemetery with military rites conducted by members of the VFW Post 2, American Legion Post 1127 and the United States Army. Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday, from 4-8 p.m., with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to the Friendly Benwood Community Christian Youth Camp.
