Northview softball drops two at Big Four Tourney

Sunday, May 10, 2009

Staff Report

TERRE HAUTE -- The Northview Knights had a difficult day at the Big Four softball tourney on Saturday afternoon.

The opening game was a heartbreaker as Northview lost a 2-0 lead in the seventh inning to fall 3-2 on an RBI double by Macy Toon.

The Braves' heroics were set up by a bizarre set of circumstances that had plenty of people scratching their heads.

South's Jena Renteria drew a lead off walk in the seventh inning off of the Knights' Shelby Colson and then Chelsea Whitesell and Taylor Derickson each singled to load up the bases.

With just one out in the inning, Ciara Hall singled home the Braves' first run of the game to set up the strange circumstances.

Tiffany Fendrick hit a shallow fly that dropped into rightfield for a fielder's choice.

Dana Hedman, a courtesy runner, headed home after tagging up and the Knights' throw home went to the catcher, standing in front of home plate. Instead of forcing the runner at the plate, the throw went to third as Hedden broke back to the bag. Meanwhile, as the rundown commenced, the Braves ended up with a second runner at third base. Hedden took off back to home where she was ruled safe on the play to tie the game at 2-apiece.

After a conference, the umpires ruled the second runner at third base was out, but allowed the run to count. Toon then followed with her line drive double to win the game.

Nicole Nelson had two hits and scored a run for the Knights and both Alyssa Conrad and Colson each singled in a run. Lauren Webster, Kirstin Kimball and Kylie McKee each had hits as well.

In the second game, Terre Haute North's Bethany Sullivan shut down the Knights, allowing just two singles in throwing a shutout.

North scored the only two runs it needed in the third on a two-run home run by Kelly Meggs.

Nelson and Conrad had the hits for the Knights who fall to 5-7 overall and face WIC foe South Vermillion on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
