Verna I. Fortin, 94, Brazil, passed away May 11, 2009, at St. Vincent Clay Hospital, Brazil, following an extended illness.

She was born in Clay County, June 9, 1914, to Levi and Ida (Clark) Thomas.

Verna married Willard Lucas, in Clay County, May 22, 1933, and later Leo Fortin in San Louis Obispo, Calif., on May 20, 1943.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brazil. Most of her life she spent caring for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Levi and Ida Thomas, two husbands Willard Lucas on Jan. 12, 1937, and Leo Fortin on April 26, 1981, daughter Shirley Albright, brothers Richard Thomas and Roy Thomas, sisters Evelyn Johnston, Mary Elwell, and Marie Pell, son Norman Lucas and great-grandson Erik Lawrence.

Survivors include her son Jeryl Fortin, Terre Haute, grandchildren Dr. Rhonda Albright Lawrence, Toni Albright Johnson, Sheila Albright Cheek, William "Billy" Albright and Doug Lucas, all of Brazil, six great grandchildren, brother Jasper Thomas, Waukee, Iowa.

Graveside services will be at Calcutta Cemetery Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or an organization of your choice. Visit www.frenchfuneralhome.com to light a candle in her memory.
