Property tax due dates set

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Property tax bills will be in the mail today.

Clay County Treasurer Debbie James confirmed to The Brazil Times Thursday her office has completed the printing of the bills, and set collection dates.

"We will be mailing the bills out Friday (today), and the first collection date is set for Monday, June 22," James said. "This gives Clay County residents a month's notice before the first installment is due."

The typical due date for the first installment is May 10 each year, but changes in legislation and other issues have caused delays in recent years.

"It's not quite the normal date, but it is closer than we have been in a few years," James said. "I'm glad we have made the improvement, even with the changes coming down from the state legislature, and it makes it a little easier on the taxpayer with the collection dates not being as close together."

The due date for the second installment will be due Tuesday, Nov. 10, which goes along with the normal schedule, and residents will also have more options available to pay their property taxes this time around.

"Along with having all Clay County locations of First Financial Bank collecting payments, like we had last year, Riddell National Bank and the Brazil branch of the Terre Haute Savings Bank will also be accepting them this year," James said. "It makes things a little less crowded in the Treasurer's Office, while allowing more of a convenience for the taxpayers."

James said payments made at the Treasurer's Office must be cash or check, and the office will have extended hours the week prior to each of the collection dates. The extended hours are:

* June 15-19, and 22, 2009 -- 8 a.m.-6 p.m.,

* Saturday, June 20, 2009 -- 8 a.m.-noon,

* Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009 -- 8 a.m.-noon, and

* Nov. 6, 9 and 10, 2009 -- 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

The Clay County Treasurer's Office is located on the first floor of the Clay County Courthouse, and normal business hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
