TERRE HAUTE -- Both the Knights of Northview and the Eels of Clay City brought their seasons to a close on Thursday, competing in the 10-team sectional competition at Terre Haute North High School.

The event was heavily dominated by upper class schools Terre Haute South and host Terre Haute North, with South edging out their inner-city rivals with a late surge to take a 174.5-173 win. The Knights and Eels finished fourth and ninth respectively, with scores of 57 and 19. While neither team was in the hunt for the overall championship, they sent multiple competitors to next week's regional.

Northview placed in six events. The Knights' top finish of the evening was in the 4x800 meter relay, as the team of Damon Hyatt, Ryan Lutes, Tanner Brown and Conor Strain finished second with a personal best time of 8:29.35. Hyatt and Lutes were also on Northview's 4x400 meter team, which finished fourth.

Also advancing were Strain (fourth in the 1600 meter run), Joel Whittington (third in the 110 meter Hurdles), Michael Flora (fourth in 100 meter Dash) and Mitch Haviland (third in Shotput). Head coach Chad Smith said his goal was to get as many competitors to advance as possible and was pleased with the final results.

Damon Hyatt qualified along with Tanner Brown, Ryan Lutes and Conor Strain in the 4x800 relay.
"I thought we performed well," Smith said. "Our goal was to get as many people through as we could and not worry about team results. I was happy."

Clay City will also be represented in next week's regional competition, placing in two events. Devon Hall finished fourth in discus with a throw of 129-9, while the 4x800 relay team of Jesse Vansickle, Conner Modesitt, Josh Decker and Parker Modesitt also placed fourth with a time of 9:02.19. Eels' coach Keith Jones said he was happy his team was able to come away with high finishes against very difficult competition.

"It's tough to go against the big boys," Jones said. "We came in just trying to be the best team (we could be). I'm happy we've got people going on.

Upon reflection both coaches seemed happy with the performances of their teams as the season came to a close.

"Obviously you want to get through the year and progress as best as you can," Smith said. "I really feel like we were able to do that and our kids turned it on when they needed to. It was a good season."

Though his team didn't experience the same level of success as Northview, Jones seemed equally proud of the level of production Clay City displayed throughout a lengthy season.

"I'm very pleased with the kids," Jones said. "They did a very good job and I think all in all we had a good season. I'm proud of em'."
