Backfish, who has driven a bus for the corporation during that time, was honored for her retirement Thursday afternoon by the state and corporation.
"I feel very proud of our bus fleet," CCSC Supt. Dan Schroeder said during the bus barn's annual cookout for employees.
CCSC Director of Transportation Frank Misner, who affectionately calls Backfish, "Fish hook," said he sent information regarding Backfish and her years of service to State Senator Richard Bray. In turn, Bray handed off the information to Gov. Mitch Daniels, who named Backfish a "Distinguished Hoosier."
She received the certificate at Thursday's event.
Backfish said she will miss seeing children on a daily basis.
"I always look forward to seeing them and how much them grow," Backfish said. "Kids are kids."
Backfish has lived in Clay County for more than 30 years. Even though she is retiring and will not see as many children regularly, she said she'll have more time to spend with her two grandchildren, ages 8 and 6.
"They'll keep me busy," she said.
