Skate-A-Thon scheduled by committee

Sunday, May 31, 2009

The Clay Community Skate Park Committee has scheduled a Skate-A-Thon for Saturday, June 20.

The event is scheduled to take place at Walmart, 2150 E. National Ave., Brazil.

Registration for the event is set to start at 10:30 a.m. The skate course will be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Concessions will be available and a DJ is scheduled to provide entertainment.

Those interested in attending can dunk local celebrities at the dunk tank at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. The first ball thrown will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Karaoke will take place from 1-3 p.m., and a band is scheduled to perform from 3-5 p.m.

Registration forms are available by calling Roberta Weliever at 443-0611. Part of the registration form includes a waiver and release of liability.

Those participating in the Skate-A-Thon are asked to collect donations in order to take part.

Officials with the skate park committee will meet with the Brazil City Parks Board Wednesday to determine if the board will move forward with a proposal to include a skatepark in the community.

Recently, the skate park committee purchased material for a park, including skatepark ramps, quarter pipes, half pipes, banks, grindboxes, ledges, rails and steps, from a skate park located in Danville, Ind., for $36,000.

The purchase was an estimated saving more than $100,000.

In a recent online poll conducted by The Brazil Times, more than 500 voted in favor of a skate park being located in Craig Park, while 489 voted for Forest Park.

During recent meetings, however, the parks board has remained split on a decision of whether to move forward with the skate park in addition to where it should be located.

Wednesday's park board meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

i hope this doesnt mean our local park board doesnt want a activity you see the kids are involved in to have a place to have recreation at? I have always thought parks was to be a place to have recreation at like softball and Tball activities at so what difference is it then to have a skatepark at for our kids to play in, so come on park board and lets have a place for these kids to go instead of going everywhere else they arent supposed to be

I think all of the adult people who are for or against the skate park should attend Wed. meeting. I myself believe the skate should be in a park of it own. If you don't know what the differnt it parent support.

Did you know that the city of Brazil is NOT liable for the injury of a skater at a skatepark if there is a sign explaining the rules of the skatepark? Indiana as well as other states in the United States has an Extreme Sports Law IC 34-13-3-3, AS AMENDED BY PUBLIC LAW 142-1999 which explains why the city is not liable for injuries providing the skatepark is marked with a set of rules governing the use of the extreme sport area.
