SPENCER -- The Northview Knights weren't quite able wrestle the sectional team championship away from defending champion Terre Haute South, but they will get another crack at the Braves in the Washington Regional.

The Knights shot a team score of 305 to finish a slim two strokes behind Terre Haute South, but earned a berth in the regional that will be played at Country Oaks Golf Course in Daviess County on Thursday. Terre Haute North shot its best round of the season and will advance as the third qualifier after carding a 310.

"Overall I was very pleased," coach Scott Buell said of the Knights' play. "But the emotions are a little mixed. It's tough for the competitor in me to lose by a couple of strokes."

Senior Kade Baker came away with medalist honors after shooting a 3-under par, 69 to edge past Terre Haute North's Jeff Ackman, who shot a 71.

"Kade played outstanding," Buell said. "It's been a big year for him. He won conference and to win the sectional is great. He's a special kid."

The Rend Lake golf recruit lit up the back nine with a 33, which was one stroke better than last year when he shot a 73 for the Knights in a runner-up finish.

The Braves placed all four of their scoring golfers in the 70's led by defending medalist, Thomas Goss, who shot a 73.

The team title came down to the final hole as No. 5 golfer, Brock Welch of the Braves, needed to stay away from a double bogey to finalize the title. Welch did just that in recording a par as South repeated as sectional champs. Northview won the 2007 title on the same course.

The round was played under a mix of sun and rain throughout the day, but didn't seem to affect the top teams. Despite a steady, light rain at times, the Knights trailed by a single stroke through the first nine holes and led through 14 holes before the Braves made a strong run by getting back-to-back eagles and a birdie on the back nine.

"Those eagles changed things in a hurry. A team having three eagles on you doesn't happen very often," Buell admitted,

The Knights coach didn't use the changing weather as an excuse for the momentum change in the sectional.

"Well the way this year has gone, we're used to playing (in the rain)," Buell said.

The Braves also got some standout efforts from their top two golfers as Goss shot a 35 on the back and Zach Hosking carded a 36 on the way to a 75.

Northview remained close as Drew Snyder came through the front nine with a 35 and finished off his round of 76 with a 41 on the final nine holes. Ryan Turner scored a 79 for the Knights with senior Austin Akers shooting an 81 and Daniel Eaglin capping Northview with a 79.

The Clay City Eels placed sixth as a team with a round of 355, but will send senior Kyler Rhodes on to the regional as an individual after he shot an 83. He joins Linton's Jordan Bradbury (81) and Sullivan's John Gilham (82) as the three lowest scoring individuals not on a qualifying team. West Vigo's Jordan Blystone shot an 83 to tie Rhodes along with Owen Valley's Kyle Jackson and all ties advance to the regional as well.

Braxton Griffith shot an 88 for the Eels for second on the team followed by a 91 from Darius Farmer, a 93 from Zach Boggs and a 98 from Austin Sinders.

Terre Haute South also counted a 77 from Shelby Stewart along with Welch's 78.

South's winning score was four strokes off last year's winning team score of 299.

In last year's regional, Northview had an off day and placed 10th with a round of 370, but Buell feels that the Knights can use last year's experience to their advantage on Thursday.

"(The experience) should help a lot," Buell said. "We played in a tournament down there this year and we'll get a practice round (today). Overall our one through five guys probably have more experience than Terre Haute South so hopefully that will help."
