ROCKVILLE -- Plans are in the final stages for Parke County Soldier/Veterans Appreciation Day, set for Saturday, June 20, at the Rockville square.
A parade honoring military personnel will kick off the day at Beechwood Park at 10:30 a.m., ending with ceremonies both religious and civil on the courthouse lawn.
The celebration is for all Parke County Veterans, past and present, who have served the country. A lunch is planned for later in the day for soldiers who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan and their immediate families, and past veterans are invited to the American Legion, AMVETS and VFW clubs for lunch as well.
During the parade, veterans will be taken either in cars, military trucks or other method of transportation so that those who cannot physically march in the parade may participate also.
Participants will conclude the parade on the south side of the courthouse and chairs will be provided for those who cannot stand.
It is hoped that residents will line the street to honor the veterans.
The parade route is north on College to High Street, east on High Street to Market Street, north on Market to United States 36 to Jefferson Street, south on Jefferson to High and west where the parade will disband and allow participants to enjoy the celebration on the courthouse lawn.
Master of ceremonies will be Brad Bumgardner, executive director of the Parke County Community Foundation.
Music for the program will be provided by Amy McAllister and John Frank. Don Collins will offer a tribute to fallen veterans and Brother Don Perry will offer the Invocation with Rev. Bill Flannigan speaking as well.
Commemorative coins will be distributed to all veterans present.
The Veterans Service Office will oversee the dedication of a permanent plaque, honoring past, present and future veterans.
Veterans wishing to participate are urged to contact Larry and Jo Stephens at 765-569-6891, Becky Miller at 765-569-2339, or John Frank at 765-569-3553 Ext. 12.
