Ted "Shorty" B. Smith, 68, Clay City, passed away June 15, 2009, at Union Hospital, following a rather brief illness.
He was born in Terre Haute, Jan. 3, 1941, to Edwin M. and Anita (Fears) Smith. Ted graduated from Garfield High School with the class of 1959. He married Virginia Watkins Jan. 31, 1960. He worked for Tri Industries in Terre Haute as an inspector and retired in 2006. He is a member of the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame. He was an accomplished brass musician and enjoyed playing Dixie land music.
He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Smith, stepfather Russell Turner, stepbrother Jack Turner and grandson Jordan Campbell
Survivors include, his mother Anita Turner, son Ted B. Smith Jr., Bloomington, daughters Penni Campbell and husband Mike, Center Point, and Tina Weber and husband Robert, Clay City, and stepbrother James Turner, Springfield, Ill., grandchildren Jeremy Smith, Derek Smith, Joel Campbell and wife Kristi, Katie Campbell, Dana Weber and Dakotah Weber, great-grandchildren: Alexandria Smith and Chase Campbell, and fiancÚ Carolyn Pickens as well as many extended family members.
Services will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City, Friday June 19, 2009, at 1 p.m., with Pastor Tom Hess officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, from 11 a.m. until time of service.
