Lieber State Recreation Area to host timber management event

CLOVERDALE -- Surrounding communities are invited to join Indiana Department of Natural Resources employees for demonstrations on timber management at the Lieber State Recreation Area Saturday, from 9 a.m.-noon.

Featured speakers will include Forest Products Specialist Jeff Settle, Property Manager of the Owen-Putnam State Forest Bill Gallogly, District Forester for Owen/Monroe counties Ralph Unversaw, Fire Prevention Coordinator Beverly Stout and PLT Coordinator Donna Rogler.

Those interested in attending will learn how to mark timber, how to estimate volume and why best management practices need to be applied after harvest.

A discussion will take place on what people need to know before harvesting.

Wood-mizer will be processing a log, which will include sawing the log, lumber grading and how to measure volume.

A fire truck and fire fighting equipment will be on display for children to learn more about wild fire safety. Smokey the Bear will also pay a visit.
